Retrospective exhibition – Part II: Recent works and war paintings

The second part of the dual anniversary exhibition in Ermelo showed more recent paintings, dating from the last 20-25 years, as well as paintings made by Viktor during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). This exhibition also showed several more “sketchy” pencil drawings, most of which Viktor created on a single day in June 1989.

Together the two exhibitions provided a fascinating overview of the many developments and distinct phases in Viktor’s long career.

Retrospective exhibition – Part I: Early works

In May and June, Viktor celebrated 60 years of exhibiting with two retrospective solo exhibitions in Ermelo. On the first exhibition, early paintings – dating from 1958 to the early 1990-s – as well as drawings and collages were shown. The opening, on May 12, was performed by Arnold van Verseveld, chairman of StEK (the Artists’ Collective Ermelo).

We look back with warm feelings at the well-attended opening, as well as at the exhibition!

Art critique by Karen Lappon on Viktor’s work

On the occasion of the Chianciano Art Biennale, Viktor received the following art critique by Karen Lappon:

“Viktor Majdandzic is an astounding abstract expressionist painter whose work goes beyond the sphere of visual art itself. In fact, his unique and bold geometric structures are embedded in biological and geological analogues.

He translates the mathematical code of nature to paint canvases that are a dreamlike juxtaposition of geometrical precision and beguiling sensual curves. The strikingly vibrant colours intensify the astonishing visceral impact of the work’s biological underpinnings.

V. Majdandzic 2 (2)The interplay of various circles, curves and lines is enhanced by multicoloured shadows which contribute to the effective play of the lines that appear to extend beyond the canvases. In his emphasis on colour and form, Viktor increases perspective and reminds us of avant-garde artist Lyubov Popova and her Cubo-futurism. The emotional effects of colour and the balance and natural harmony of the lines, together with the overlapping shapes, create a rhythmic pattern and a sense of speed and space typical of German Expressionist masters like Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger.

The structural flow, the natural precision and the organic symmetry of Viktor’s compositions are set in motion by a potent and striking energy that originates from the artist’s creativity and study of the mysteries of nature and the universe. Viktor observes, deciphers and elaborates the world that surrounds us in order to propose it to us in his sublime oeuvre.

An artist whose great talent is overwhelming and intriguing beyond discussion. Observing his works is like a journey to the origins of life itself, like participating in the magic of creation, like the ultimate answer to the existential questions we ask ourselves. Astonishingly enlightening.”

New paintings from the last months!

Viktor cannot put as much time and physical effort into painting as he used to. This forces him to paint in a more patient, considerate way. His most recent works are delicate and balanced, yet intense – they seem to breathe a sense of calm thoroughness.

Have a look at the latest paintings in the updated 2014 -2015 gallery.
